3 reasons to book a sunset session | Bucks County PA Family Photographer

Do you worry that a sunset session would be past your child's normal bedtime?

It's normal to worry about your children's normal routine when planning a portrait session. After all, who wants a cranky toddler for picture day? I appreciate the investment, time, and effort involved in planning for family portraits so I wouldn't ever suggest something that would be uncomfortable for one of my family's. BUT-

There are a few reasons I suggest booking a sunset session, and in my experience both as a photographer and as a parent, I find that most little ones do just fine! Let me explain why I always prefer to shoot as close to sunset as possible :)

1. Sunset timing allows me to work in the most flattering light. You might think that 10am on a Saturday is the best time for your family to have pictures taken (post-coffee, breakfast, time for the family to get dressed at a leisurely pace- I get it!!), but I assure you we wouldn't get the quality of work that I am known for if we shot at that time. We can choose to shoot in a fully shaded spot during the hours of high sun, but that type of light is not as interesting or beautiful to me. It is also rather limiting to have to encourage children to stay in the shade instead of running out into the bright sun.

2. Squinty eyes and raccoon shadows in full sun. Need I say more??

3. Not only is sunset light more flattering, it adds depth to the images and creates a mood we just can't replicate during full sun.  (Of course I love shooting in full sun in certain situations- it can be fun to play with deep shadows and colors pop in a whole different way- but to me it's not as pleasing for portrait work.)

So what do you think? If I've convinced you about the quality of light, what about the bedtime routine??

What I've found after many years photographing families is that when little ones are outside enjoying the fresh air, getting all those extra snuggles and attention from their family, they usually are so content they don't even notice it's close to their normal bedtime. In fact, older toddlers and children feel excited like they are doing something special to be out a little later.

I still have a few more dates open for sunset sessions. With all the colors of autumn it will be splendid!

I just love the light and the peace at Lake Nockamixon. This sweet family from Buck's County PA wanted a relaxed family portrait session to celebrate their baby boy's first birthday. Most children just love being close to the water, and are so happy to be outside on a warm night splashing in the lake, skipping rocks (or trying to put them in their mouths as with this sweet one-year-old boy!) If you'd like to book a session at the lake please contact me to get on my calendar!

5 reasons to consider a lifestyle newborn session | Lehigh Valley + Bucks County Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

Maybe you've debated between a traditional posed newborn session and an in-home lifestyle session. Both are beautiful options!

Here are 5 benefits of a lifestyle in-home newborn session to consider as you choose a photographer to capture this important family milestone!

1. You don't have to pack up the whole family and rush out the door to get to the studio!

2. Your toddler or older siblings feel comfortable because they are in their own element. These sessions are super laid back and there isn't pressure on the siblings to perform for the camera. They get to show me their toys, fave books, and their home, and it puts them at ease!

3. The lifestyle sessions capture the setting for your growing family -the home truly is where the heart is! Your home- no matter how you feel about it, is part of your family's story. Your children will remember what life felt like in those walls. My favorite pictures from when I was a baby are ones that tell me a story about where we lived, what the house looked like, what kind of clothes my parents wore, and what my siblings were up to. Though our home decor and clothing will always look "dated" after decades, the images remain timeless because they form an intrinsic part of our life story. One reason I don't use props in my work is because I feel that props tend to just look trendy or dated without a context or purpose.  A favorite stuffed animal, or quilt from grandma to me are not "props" but rather pieces of the story.

4. There is no pressure to photograph baby in the first 2 weeks as with most traditional posed session. If baby is awake, that's ok! If baby needs to eat, or be changed, that is just fine and a part of their newborn story.

5. A lifestyle newborn session, while celebrating this beautiful new baby, is not solely focused on the newborn, but rather captures their place within the greater context of the whole family. Those sibling dynamics are so beautiful to capture, and even grandparents that might be visiting! If there aren't older siblings in the picture, the special bonds between mom and dad and baby are able to be captured in a very authentic way.

If you wonder if you would get enough images of just the baby, in my lifestyle newborn sessions I spend time creating simple, classic portraits of just the baby, because those are so important too! We want to remember their long eyelashes, their tiny fingers, those big eyes and tiny toes at this stage!

If you are expecting or have a newborn baby and would be interested in a lifestyle in-home session, please reach out and tell me more about your family! I'd love to talk with you to plan a session!

The sun rises and sets with you | Washington, DC Documentary Photographer

Together we rise.

This is a visual love story between a mother and child, of their bond that is as certain as the sun rising and setting day after day.

This truly was the kind of Life Story session that I dream about. It was authentic, full of raw emotions and universal expressions of motherhood. This storytelling session candidly portrays the daily rituals of a mother and babe at the end of the busy workday, running home from daycare to spend some quality time together before bedtime.

When Allison contacted me about doing a documentary session, she had a really special request: that it didn't end with bedtime so that we could capture the special time she shares with Enzo as they wake together each morning. We agreed for me to stay over so that I could be there come dawn to capture their waking moments, snuggled in bed, nursing and playing before beginning another hectic workday.

If you would be interested in having a part of your daily life captured through my lens, please contact me to book. I am available for limited travel sessions. I am offering a discount on Life Story documentary sessions that are booked and shot during the month of August.

Fair warning: If you get squeamish about the feminine figure, and mothers nursing their babes, then you might want to close right out of this post. This is a very intimate portrayal of motherhood- the daily rituals of caring for a baby, nursing to sleep, and nursing upon waking.

What kind of life story would you like us to tell during our session?

These images are mainly for me. I want real snapshots of our life together.

We start with getting home, checking the mail together, changing into play clothes to go outside.

We go sit at the pool, on the lawn, or sit on our porch and read a book.

We take a bath, sing/dance, brush mommy's teeth and read before breast feeding and bed.

Why is it important to you to document this particular life story? What do these images of your everyday family life mean to you?

This is the hardest most amazing chapter of my life so far. When I'm not busy working, folding laundry and contemplating our life together, I'm trying to be incredibly present to him. I'm so in awe of this motherhood journey, but haven't documented it as well as I'd like to. I have very few images of us together, and sadly, most of them are selfies. Although I'm busying myself trying to build a life for us, I don't want to lose sight of the value of savoring the quiet, intimate moments of our life, too. I'm trying to capture this chapter before he's all grown up.

I feel these images deep in my core. Allison and I chatted about where we're at in life, and she asked me a really good question: What does living the fullest life look like for me? I had no answer for that question at the moment but it's one to really sit with for a while. After spending the past few days working with this story, I realized I am already living it. I need to remember that :) Creating art out of the beauty of motherhood, childhood, and family life feels very much like living this life to the fullest.

Portraits of Motherhood: Lehigh Valley & Bucks County Motherhood Photographer

Earlier this month I held my first mini sessions devoted entirely to motherhood at the beautiful Fox and Finch Studio in Bethlehem, PA. The moments we captured of these beautiful mamas and their little ones make me so incredibly happy. Just taking 20 minutes or so to love on your baby, cuddle them, sing to them, nurse them, and focus on that mother/baby bond, was so very beautiful.

From my own experience, I am personally rarely in any pictures with my own three little ones, and I can tell you it would be a treasure for my kids to have images of me with them. Many of us mothers never feel worthy to be in pictures, so we want sessions to focus on the kids. We still carry that post-baby pouch (in my case, a 2 year post-partum pouch!), we wish we fit into those pre-pregnancy jeans better, maybe we haven't done our hair or makeup in a while.... but our kids don't see any of those self-determined "imperfections." They just know us and love us as we are. We are moms- we are comfort, peace, joy, solace to our little ones. Just as each of our children is perfect to us, we are just right to them, just as we are.

Even the busiest toddler boy will sit in his mama's lap and listen to her sing, listen to her tell him a story about the day he was born, play "This Little Piggy," or "Patty Cake". They crave our attention all day long, so when we sit down with the intention of giving them our all for a short while, they really do eat it up- I promise.

I adore these images and can't wait to create more portraits of motherhood. If you live in the Lehigh Valley or Bucks County area, please consider booking a session to capture your intimate bond with your children. I will be offering motherhood sessions all summer long- bring on the fields and flowers and frolicking at sundown!

9-month Old Milestone Session: Bucks County, PA Baby Photographer

One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is when I get to develop long-lasting relationships with my clients. I am delighted to be offering lifestyle milestone baby portrait sessions in the Lehigh Valley and Bucks County, PA. I met Grant this Fall when he was 6-months old and it was so fun to see him again this weekend. SO much change in just 3 months! He is crawling, babbling, holding himself up and taking steps while assisted by mom and dad. I also adore his nursery with a woodland animal theme. Love this family's style!

Here are a few favorites from Grant's 9-month old milestone session. I can't wait to see him again this summer to celebrate his first birthday!
