Firstborn son | Lehigh Valley PA Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

Do you remember those first few days at home with your firstborn baby? It all kind of feels like a blur, while at the same time becomes forever ingrained in your memory of parenthood. I will always remember what it felt like to come home from the hospital and walk into our Maryland condo with our oldest, setting him down in the carseat in the living room, and looking at each other like "Now what?" In my memory we were so young. 29 and 31 years old. Looking back on the pictures of us from those first days, we were so tired, but delighted. Now that baby is eight and a half years old, and almost as tall as I am. To say that these days go by fast is an understatement.

I loved capturing the S family at home where they are most comfortable, admiring with wonder their firstborn son. It was such a joy to be present with them for this stage in their parenthood journey.

Party of 5 | Lehigh Valley Newborn Photographer

This documentary newborn session with one of my favorite Hellertown PA families was all about capturing life at home with three children 4 and under. Parenting at this stage is busy, tiring, silly, colorful and full of laughter. I love how this family embraced a truly documentary approach and dressed as they usually would for a Sunday morning at home. We did do a few simple newborn portraits as well like we did with their second child, and a few family bed snuggles because it's nice to be all be in the frame together. It's been such a joy watching the E family grow since their oldest was about a year old! I'm grateful they've trusted me with yet another milestone in their family life.

Did you miss their birth photography session? Go back and have a look at this incredible mama's birth story.

5 reasons to consider a lifestyle newborn session | Lehigh Valley + Bucks County Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

Maybe you've debated between a traditional posed newborn session and an in-home lifestyle session. Both are beautiful options!

Here are 5 benefits of a lifestyle in-home newborn session to consider as you choose a photographer to capture this important family milestone!

1. You don't have to pack up the whole family and rush out the door to get to the studio!

2. Your toddler or older siblings feel comfortable because they are in their own element. These sessions are super laid back and there isn't pressure on the siblings to perform for the camera. They get to show me their toys, fave books, and their home, and it puts them at ease!

3. The lifestyle sessions capture the setting for your growing family -the home truly is where the heart is! Your home- no matter how you feel about it, is part of your family's story. Your children will remember what life felt like in those walls. My favorite pictures from when I was a baby are ones that tell me a story about where we lived, what the house looked like, what kind of clothes my parents wore, and what my siblings were up to. Though our home decor and clothing will always look "dated" after decades, the images remain timeless because they form an intrinsic part of our life story. One reason I don't use props in my work is because I feel that props tend to just look trendy or dated without a context or purpose.  A favorite stuffed animal, or quilt from grandma to me are not "props" but rather pieces of the story.

4. There is no pressure to photograph baby in the first 2 weeks as with most traditional posed session. If baby is awake, that's ok! If baby needs to eat, or be changed, that is just fine and a part of their newborn story.

5. A lifestyle newborn session, while celebrating this beautiful new baby, is not solely focused on the newborn, but rather captures their place within the greater context of the whole family. Those sibling dynamics are so beautiful to capture, and even grandparents that might be visiting! If there aren't older siblings in the picture, the special bonds between mom and dad and baby are able to be captured in a very authentic way.

If you wonder if you would get enough images of just the baby, in my lifestyle newborn sessions I spend time creating simple, classic portraits of just the baby, because those are so important too! We want to remember their long eyelashes, their tiny fingers, those big eyes and tiny toes at this stage!

If you are expecting or have a newborn baby and would be interested in a lifestyle in-home session, please reach out and tell me more about your family! I'd love to talk with you to plan a session!

The sun rises and sets with you | Washington, DC Documentary Photographer

Together we rise.

This is a visual love story between a mother and child, of their bond that is as certain as the sun rising and setting day after day.

This truly was the kind of Life Story session that I dream about. It was authentic, full of raw emotions and universal expressions of motherhood. This storytelling session candidly portrays the daily rituals of a mother and babe at the end of the busy workday, running home from daycare to spend some quality time together before bedtime.

When Allison contacted me about doing a documentary session, she had a really special request: that it didn't end with bedtime so that we could capture the special time she shares with Enzo as they wake together each morning. We agreed for me to stay over so that I could be there come dawn to capture their waking moments, snuggled in bed, nursing and playing before beginning another hectic workday.

If you would be interested in having a part of your daily life captured through my lens, please contact me to book. I am available for limited travel sessions. I am offering a discount on Life Story documentary sessions that are booked and shot during the month of August.

Fair warning: If you get squeamish about the feminine figure, and mothers nursing their babes, then you might want to close right out of this post. This is a very intimate portrayal of motherhood- the daily rituals of caring for a baby, nursing to sleep, and nursing upon waking.

What kind of life story would you like us to tell during our session?

These images are mainly for me. I want real snapshots of our life together.

We start with getting home, checking the mail together, changing into play clothes to go outside.

We go sit at the pool, on the lawn, or sit on our porch and read a book.

We take a bath, sing/dance, brush mommy's teeth and read before breast feeding and bed.

Why is it important to you to document this particular life story? What do these images of your everyday family life mean to you?

This is the hardest most amazing chapter of my life so far. When I'm not busy working, folding laundry and contemplating our life together, I'm trying to be incredibly present to him. I'm so in awe of this motherhood journey, but haven't documented it as well as I'd like to. I have very few images of us together, and sadly, most of them are selfies. Although I'm busying myself trying to build a life for us, I don't want to lose sight of the value of savoring the quiet, intimate moments of our life, too. I'm trying to capture this chapter before he's all grown up.

I feel these images deep in my core. Allison and I chatted about where we're at in life, and she asked me a really good question: What does living the fullest life look like for me? I had no answer for that question at the moment but it's one to really sit with for a while. After spending the past few days working with this story, I realized I am already living it. I need to remember that :) Creating art out of the beauty of motherhood, childhood, and family life feels very much like living this life to the fullest.

Welcoming baby Grace | Lehigh Valley Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

I love being invited to document the family as a big sibling welcomes a new baby home. So many sweet moments and brother's eyes just tell it all. Best friends for life :)

Welcome Baby Edgar! Hellertown Growing Family Session | Lehigh Valley Newborn Photographer

It's always a bit daunting when a friend and talented photographer hires you to do their newborn session, but so much fun too. Baby Alexandra was two weeks old when we did their Growing Family lifestyle newborn session. I loved capturing their family life in motion- mommy waking big-brother Austin up from his nap with some cuddles, family reading time in bed while mommy nursed the baby, mommy snuggles and babywearing, dad firing up the barbecue and family superhero playtime before dinner. This was a FULL session! I love Growing Family sessions so much as we get to explore the family life with new baby in tow. Life moves on, toddlers need some extra attention (and popsicles!), and new babies fit right into the mix. Thank you Edgar Family for having me be a part of this amazing time in your family!

Welcome Maeve! Growing Family Newborn Session | Coopersburg, PA Newborn Family Photographer

I loved everything about this Growing Family session a few weeks ago as my friends welcomed their fourth baby, sweet Maeve, into their world. Growing Family sessions are my take on newborn photography- a storytelling approach to capture the authentic family life as it ebbs and flows with a new baby in the home, along with some more traditional portraits in the mix (afterall, grandmas love posed portraits, right?).

With two older brothers and a sister, Maeve is adored beyond measure. I love the images we captured of the family in motion- both at play, and at work in the kitchen. Life goes on with a fourth baby in the house. But still, the awe over this new life is mighty.

Lehigh Valley Lifestyle Newborn Photographer: Welcoming Baby Stella!

I loved every minute photographing this in-home lifestyle newborn session in Nazareth, PA. This sweet family's first born is 2, and was so excited to welcome his new baby sister Stella home! Stella was about one week old when we did her session. What I love so much about lifestyle newborn work is how the older siblings are involved in the session, and I am able to capture just the family being a family- playing with the big kids, changing diapers, soothing and burping their newborn baby. All the emotions, smells, snuggles of a newborn, in their parents calming arms. Parents relaxed and in their own homes. Daddy playing hide-n-seek with big brother while baby nursed in her nursery. So many great moments from this playful session!
