An evening with the R Family in Old Town Alexandria

It’s shoots like these that make me LOVE family portraiture, and emphasize the big difference between a family on-location portrait session, and a Big-Box 4.99 portrait session. I was invited to follow the beautiful R family through an late summer evening of fun in Old Town. I have been wanting to shoot in Old Town for a while, so I was really excited when they said that was a special location to them. The kids fed the ducks, played on their tricycle, took a trolley ride, played near the fountains, climbed stairs, played with sticks and dirt, and had a fabulous time! This is what we mean by the term “lifestyle photography”- capturing moments as they happen, in your element, and without the stress of having to get the kids to stand a certain way and smile. The family is engaged in each other- and who wouldn’t want pictures of your 3 year old running to you for a hug, or your baby girl holding your hand for those early steps? I wish I had those kind of pictures of me as a child! The R family is just a joy to be around- glowing with genuine love and affection. They are headed back to the South where they are from in just a few days, and this was sort of a farewell to DC photo shoot. I am so glad we could squeeze this in before they leave! I will be sad to see them go, but excited for them to return to their family and roots in Texas!

Little mama is 2!

One of my very favorite little ladies to photograph is now 2!! She has grown so much, and really got into the photo shoot this year. When she was one it was all about chasing after her at the park, with lots of shots from behind. This year, we got some fabulous shots of her gorgeous smile that quite resembles her mama’s. She was so playful with her Grandma who was in town visiting, and got really adorable picking the daises and then stuffing them in her bloomers! I love those shots in particular- classic, childhood innocence. This is such a fun age!

The K Family

I have been home in Rochester, NY for my summer vacation, spending some quality time with my family. While I was home, a few of my old friends asked me to do family portrait sessions. Of course I was excited when I got to photograph the beautiful K Family. Jill and Keith are amazing, strong parents, committed to their faith and the challenges of parenting their three adorable children. The boys were hard to keep still for a photo, and kept me on my toes, but sweet E is totally at that girly age where she just loves to be photographed. Thanks to the whole family for their patience in hiking all around Rochester’s Highland Park for these images.

Mini Sessions {highlights}

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing four wonderful families for my holiday mini sessions. We had to change locations at last minute due to the rain, and we ended up at the beautiful National Botanic Gardens in downtown DC. I will be posting some highlights from the different shoots. Thanks to all my families for your flexibility and for a fun day of portraiture! SO many beautiful children in one day!! (Moms and Dads aren’t so shabby either!)

Little J {6 years old}

Last Fall I photographed little J when she was 5 years old at Dumbarton Oaks. She looked so adorable in her black and white striped tights, and in spite of the fact that she wasn’t too interested in having her portraits done, we captured some really fabulous images. I was so excited when her parents contacted me again this October for another portrait session. We did this year’s shoot at Tudor Place gardens in Georgetown, another hidden gem of a location. When I arrived, little J was hiding behind the shrubs, only this year, she was hiding for fun, not fear, and we had a fabulous shoot. She really knows how to work the posing all on her own! Just adore her smile and spunk. Thanks J for another wonderful portrait session!
